Bosses at Birmingham Airport have given the thumbs up to the new government's decision to scrap proposals for Heathrow's third runway.
Paul Kehoe, the airport's chief executive officer, said: "We welcome the government's new thinking, which seems to take a more pragmatic and equitable view.
In these difficult times it makes sense to use and sensibly improve the assets that you have got, rather than building whole new runways.
We have plenty of capacity and, linked to high-speed rail, we are uniquely positioned to attract passengers from the overheated south east." Plans are in place for a runway extension at Birmingham Airport which will allow more long-haul destinations to be reached via nonstop flights.
At present the airport is only working at 40 per cent of its capacity.
Kehoe said: "Aviation has its part to play in an integrated transport system, and rail must play a part in distributing the demand for international gateways to airports that have capacity.
Birmingham is a prime example as it is just over an hour from London.
Even now the majority of Londoners could probably get to Birmingham as quickly as they could reach Heathrow's check-in desks."
